German forward, Celia Sasic, pushed her penalty kick wide left and so turned a nerve-wracking and wildly dramatic showdown between the No.1 and No.2-ranked teams in the world.
The United States would draw first blood after Alex Morgan was taken down inside the German goaltender’s box. Enter: Carli Lloyd. Lloyd drilled home the penalty kick and put the United States on the board, 1-0. Kelly O’Hara would later put the game to rest after connecting with a skillfully timed boot.
After defeating the No.1-ranked Germans, the Americans now march on to Vancouver for the second consecutive World Cup Finals. They will face a familiar foe Sunday when they take on the defending champion, Japan.
The U.S. shut out its competition in both the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals, besting Colombia, 2-0 and China 1-0, respectively. It has been 16 years since the Americans have won the title. Could this be the year they return to glory?
