How to Start Collecting Hockey Cards
You don't need to spend a lot or know the lingo to get started. Pick a favorite team or player, grab a few packs and see what you pull. Here's the easiest way in.
Step 1 · Start with retail
Grab a Blaster box
Retail boxes are the most affordable way to open a lot of cards at once, and they ship right to your door from the Upper Deck Store.
- MVP Blaster, $19.99: 11 packs of 7 cards. Built for new collectors, with a big base set and plenty of rookies.
- MVP Retail, $69.99: 36 packs if you want to build the set.
- Artifacts Blaster, $29.99: a step up, with memorabilia and autograph chances.
Step 2 · Try it digitally
Buy by the pack on e-Pack
Upper Deck e-Pack® lets you buy a single pack, open it instantly on your phone or computer, and ship the real cards to your door whenever you want.
- Single packs start at $14.99 (SPx and Series 2 Hockey)
- Trade with other collectors right in the app
- New Arrivals rookie packs drop all season
Step 3 · Go local
Visit a hobby shop
Once you're hooked, a local hobby shop is where you'll find hobby boxes with the best hit rates, plus people who can help you value and trade your cards.
- Hobby-exclusive products and higher-end boxes
- Box breaks, events and trade nights
- Advice from experienced collectors
Know the lingo
What's the difference between a Blaster, Retail and Hobby box?
Blaster and Retail boxes are sold online and at big-box stores and are the most affordable way to start. Blasters often include exclusive parallels. Hobby boxes are sold through hobby shops and cost more, but they typically offer better odds at autographs and memorabilia.
How does e-Pack work if the cards are digital?
Every e-Pack card is backed by a real card. You open packs digitally right away, then request shipment of the physical cards to your address whenever you're ready.
Which cards should I keep?
Start with what you love: your team, your favorite players and rookies. Numbered cards, autographs and rookie cards of top prospects are the ones collectors look for most. Check our guide to card values to learn more.
How do I protect my cards?
Put your best pulls in a penny sleeve, then a top loader, and store them away from sunlight and moisture. That keeps edges and corners in the condition they came out of the pack.
